Make our oceans healthier

Mission

SeaGrown has one mission - to make our oceans healthier. Whether offshore, inshore or even in port, SeaGrown can create cleaner seas, increased marine biodiversity and climate change mitigation by deploying Kelpedo wherever it is needed to tackle the triple planetary crisis.

Problem

What's broken? (Clear and relatable description of the pain point you're solving.)

If seaweed was grown across ~9% of the oceans it could remove all of the human-produced carbon in the atmosphere, replace all of our fossil fuels and sustain increased fish production to help feed our growing population (De Ramon N’Yeurt et al 2012).

So, why are we not using our oceans to grow more of it? The answer is simple. Despite the clear potential, until now there has been no technological solution for growing seaweed and shellfish at scale and targeted where their capabilities are most needed to compensate for environmental damage. None of the existing methods can function in high-energy, offshore conditions, restricting their use to crowded, inshore waters and preventing scaling. Existing technology also demands exclusive use of water-space, creating competition with other critical marine industries such as commercial shipping, offshore energy and fishing. They are also labour intensive, largely manual, and failure-prone. For all of these reasons, traditional methods for cultivating seaweed and shellfish have been extremely limited in their scope to provide nature based solutions, meaning the sector has stalled and a crucial opportunity to make our oceans more healthy is being missed.

Solution

SeaGrown is the first company capable of seaweed and shellfish cultivation at scale that can be made commercially available.

The Kelpedo cultivation system offers unparalleled practical advantages, making seaweed and shellfish cultivation a realistic possibility where previously it was out of reach and delivering ecosystem benefits wherever needed - offshore, inshore or in port.

Key features or advantages

SeaGrown’s Kelpedo system has a number of critical USPs:

  • One-stop shop: Kelpedo addresses all three of the triple planetary crises – climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. SeaGrown carries out the whole process, meaning customers can fulfil their environmental obligations without worrying about managing the solution.

  • Year-round operation: Kelpedo can retain seaweed / shellfish growth all year round, meaning biodiversity uplift can be retained all year round.

  • Scalability: Kelpedo is scalable to achieve significant impact in almost any location. In UK territorial seas, areas for Kelpedo deployment are more than 100 times greater than those available for deployment of other nature-based solutions.

  • Tried and tested: Kelpedo has been deployed continuously for 5 years at an offshore site in the North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast demonstrating that it is capable of withstanding extreme winter offshore conditions and growing seaweed all year round.

  • Co-Location: Kelpedo integrates seamlessly with other operations, meaning benefits can be delivered with no interruption or adjustment necessary to customer activities.

  • Any shape of area: Kelpedo can occupy areas of any shape, size or depth to fit in with customers specific operational needs.

  • Flexibility: Kelpedo can function in all areas where our customers are operating. Offshore, inshore, or in port, and can be removed rapidly for decommissioning.

  • Low risk: Kelpedo is tried and tested in a real-world environment. It poses very low navigational risk and therefore reputational risk for customers is correspondingly low.

  • Social license: SeaGrown has developed significant social license through extensive outreach, education and engagement with the public and Government. Kelpedo is recognised by UK regulators as a positive, constructive solution. Further, it is possible (given minor policy reform) for fishing vessels to work Kelpedo units and deliver environmental benefits as a means of paid diversification, safeguarding heritage jobs in deprived coastal communities.

There is no other known product on the market which can achieve all of the above, therefore SeaGrown has the opportunity to become a Category Creator, taking ownership of the market for marine environmental compensation and becoming the go-to partner for all marine developments.

Market Opportunity

SeaGrown has identified 4 key target sectors:

  • Offshore wind and other offshore construction requiring biodiversity compensation.

  • Water companies seeking to improve coastal bathing water.

  • Ports and harbours seeking to improve biodiversity and water quality to support port infrastructure development.

  • Businesses with maritime links looking for ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) partnerships via our ‘Plant a Tree in the SeaTM’ initiative.

We have achieved initial traction with customers in all of these sectors.

Go-to-Market Strategy

To date, the development of high-integrity personal relationships with initial clients have proven highly effective.

Reputation is everything, and SeaGrown works hard at developing and maintaining a good one. This has been evidenced by the business winning RWE’s global competition for offshore wind biodiversity and co-location solutions in 2024, winning the Port of Tyne sustainability award at Maritime Innovation Week in London in 2025 and being Earthshot Prize nominees on 3 occasions.

Traction

SeaGrown has achieved initial sales with large clients such as Orsted, RWE and Yorkshire Water. Multiple further contracts are in late-stage negotiation for commencement in early / mid 2026.

Business Model

You’ve heard of SaaS, now meet SeaWeed aaS (SWaaS)! SeaGrown is pioneering Seaweed as a Service – our clients pay us to deliver marine ecosystem services generated by targeting seaweed and shellfish right where they are needed. Using Kelpedo, we can support our clients operations by boosting biodiversity, creating cleaner seas and absorbing carbon to make environmental compliance and consenting easier and increasing vital social license for major marine projects.

Team

SeaGrown is a Private Limited Company, wholly owned by the founders Wave Crookes and Laura Robinson.

  • Wave Crookes is a professional mariner and diver with over 30 years of experience working on or under every ocean on Earth.

  • Laura Robinson is a leading scientist with an international profile in research and an enviable track record in marine and climate science.

Funding
